Nasal Obstruction Q&A

What causes a nasal obstruction?

A nasal obstruction occurs when your nasal passages are blocked, making it difficult to breathe through your nose. It’s not inherently a disease but a symptom of an underlying condition in your nose.

There are many causes of nasal obstruction, each leading to different symptoms. The causes vary, and the most common of these include:

  • Deviated septum
  • Enlarged adenoids
  • Nasal tumors
  • Nasal polyps
  • Enlarged bony structures
  • Chronic sinusitis

In children, the most common causes of nasal obstruction are enlarged adenoids or allergies. However, the abnormal nasal structure is also a culprit in children and adults alike.

Are there symptoms associated with nasal obstruction?

The symptoms you experience with a nasal obstruction are highly dependent on what’s causing the problem. The main issue is the inability to pass air through your nasal passage. Other symptoms that you may experience include:

  • Trouble breathing through your nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Pressure in your face
  • Headaches
  • Postnasal drip

If the nasal obstruction is caused by something like a runny nose, the symptoms often subside in a few days. However, if your symptoms are caused by chronic sinusitis or a deviated septum, treatment is often necessary to completely remove the obstruction.

What is the treatment for a nasal obstruction?

The type of treatment Dr. Bhayani recommends is based on the cause of your nasal obstruction. For instance, if you’re suffering from allergies that are causing chronic sinusitis, Dr. Bhayani prescribes antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids to decrease inflammation.

For structural problems that don’t respond to decongestants or corticosteroids, surgery is necessary to permanently reshape the nasal passages to breathe normally through your nose. A septoplasty is done when you suffer from a deviated septum.

Balloon sinuplasty is performed when your nasal obstruction is due to chronic sinusitis. This minimally invasive procedure opens your nasal sinuses by inflating a tiny surgical balloon to dilate the area.

Dr. Bhayani provides integrated and modern treatment methods to help you finally get relief from nasal obstruction.
